Why You Shouldn’t Call Junk Removal to Empty Your House

When you’ve got a house full of stuff to empty, the temptation to call a junk removal company and just make everything go away at once is really tempting.

Here in Vancouver, truck after truck after truck hauls trailers full of amazing things to the recycling centre or the dump, every. Single. Day. What a waste. So much of it is good stuff. We’ve found vintage electronics, guitar amplifiers, bike parts, video games, DVD and CD collections, precious metals, antique photographs and so much more – rescued just before it was gone forever.

Let’s talk about some of the things we’ve found in the trash. Yep, garbage.

Or these Tiffany & Co. empty boxes, which we rescued juuuuuust before the guy threw them in the cardboard recycling (we got about $200 for all these plus a few others):

Once we found a box of photo transparencies / negatives, all featuring pictures of train cars from the 1950s and 1960s. The photographer had taken meticulous pictures and dated every 2×2 inch photo, keeping accurate, chronological records and storing each one in a paper sleeve. The transparencies were left in a pile of garbage at a yard sale.

We got $4000 USD for those.

Why people throw perfectly good things in the trash

A lot of times people don’t realize that anyone wants the things they don’t. But we’ve all heard the phrase “one person’s trash is another person’s treasure” and from experience we know just how true that statement is. Even more often, it seems like people DO know their things have a value to someone, but they don’t have the time or energy to sort through, and need it all gone at once. So they call junk haulers. It makes sense. It’s easy.

You might not care if your stuff has any value, and that’s just fine. But if it still has a useful life and might be appreciated by someone else, it would be a shame for it to be thrown out or recycled, wouldn’t it?
